How to Become a Cosmetologist in Illinois

The steps to become a cosmetologist in Illinois start with the fundamentals: your education. The first and most important step is enrolling in a state-approved cosmetology program.

Choosing the Right Cosmetology Program

When you choose a cosmetology school, you’re setting the foundation for your entire future career. This stage is where you’ll acquire all the skills you need to launch a successful career. So, look for a program that offers a mix of classroom theory and real-world practice.

At Cosmetology & Spa Academy we designed a curriculum that covers all areas of haircutting, coloring, skincare, makeup as well as essential business knowledge.

Illinois State Cosmetology Exam

Once you’ve completed your cosmetology education, the next crucial step is obtaining your Illinois cosmetology license.

The license is issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). This institution regulates professional standards to protect both consumers and practitioners.

To become licensed, you must pass the Illinois State Licensing Exam. This exam consists of:

A written theory exam that serves to test your knowledge on important cosmetology principles, safety regulations, sanitation practices as well as state laws.

A practical exam during which you will demonstrate your abilities and skills in areas like haircutting, styling, chemical applications and client interactions.

Submit Your License Application

Once you’ve passed the licensing exams, you can apply for your license. Review the IDFPR online portal for all relevant information. This streamlined system allows for easier application submission, renewal and tracking of your licensing status.

Our staff at CSA will help you through every step of the way. From exam preparation to application submission, we’ll make sure you are fully ready to navigate the process with no stress.

What the Training Hours Include

A cosmetology program is quite thorough and it is purposefully designed to equip you with all the necessary skills and knowledge you need to succeed as a professional.

In the classroom, you’ll get to study topics like anatomy, chemistry, safety procedures and the science behind hair, skin and nails.

Meanwhile, in the student salon, you’ll get to work directly with clients under the supervision of licensed instructors. During this stage, you’ll be able to put your knowledge into practice and refine your techniques in a safe and controlled environment.
